My name is Lisa Snelling and I am a qualified and experienced Shiatsu and Reiki practitioner based in Nether Edge Sheffield. I specialise in shiatsu, a form of body work originating from Japan that gently enables your body to relax, promoting well-being. Over my years of working with a wide range of individuals, I see my role to help you to work with how your individual system is to strengthen or relax. Additional training has equipped me with skills to gently work with musculoskeletal misalignment. In addition, I have training in a technique known as Central Channel Release which works on deeper layers of body fascia where stress and tension can build. This gentle work releases stress patterns and can facilitate greater ease and fluidity of movement. Movement is life!

Since I can remember, I always felt that thoughts and emotions affected me physically and the key to well-being lay in understanding and working with the body and mind together. What I love about shiatsu is the idea that emotions we struggle with are as important as other aspects of our self-care such as diet, exercise, relationships and occupation fulfilment. It just makes sense to me.


Prior to my studies in Shiatsu, I had worked for fourteen years in administrative roles in the United Nations and then in academia. In the academic environment, I have worked as a health researcher on clinical trials, reviewing research evidence for NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

Despite opportunities to progress in these environments, I knew I wanted to work more closely with people. By chance a friend and colleague who was herself a Shiatsu practitioner suggested trying an introductory weekend. That was 21 years ago. The weekend became two years in Nottingham with the British School of Shiatsu-do and a final two years with Sheffield’s Northern School of Shiatsu. The impact of receiving treatments in training and subsequently, has had a profoundly positive effect on my life and I endeavour to share that with clients.

Since my diploma training, I have dedicated my time to studying and refining my knowledge of shiatsu therapy and oriental diagnosis. I have trained in Structural alignment and Central Channel Release; the former is for musculoskeletal misalignments and Central Channel works on the deep Central Channel to unwind deeper stress and tension within the body and hence the mind; we do not distinguish in Shiatsu. This understanding complements my own belief in the importance of being able to reconnect with how we are feeling as a way of functioning more calmly and more effectively in our busy lives.

I qualified as a registered practitioner of Shiatsu in 2005 and a Shiatsu teacher, denoted by the letter “T” at the end of my qualification, FwSS (Fellow of the Shiatsu Society) in 2016.

I also study and teach how to research Shiatsu and other complementary therapies. For this, I have a PhD in Health Psychology in which I examined Therapist Effect in treating people with Multiple Sclerosis using Shiatsu with Teesside University. We often measure and observe the effect of therapies without looking at how therapists differ in their practice. My PhD looked at this aspect.
